Reading Gloria Anzaldúa’s Drawings

Saturday, June 16 from 3.30pm – 5pm
Workshop with Verena Melgarejo Weinandt

Workshop about the imagery of the Chicana, tejana, worker, dyke-feminist poet and theoretician:

My job as an artist is to bear witness to what haunts us, to step back and attempt to see the pattern in these events (personal and societal) and how we can repair el daño (the damage) by using the imagination and its vision. I believe in the transformative power and medicine of art.” (Gloria Anzaldúa)

The workshop is dedicated to the lesser-known drawings of the writer Gloria Anzaldúa (1942-2004), who said, an image is worth a thousand words because there is a cluster of meanings associated with each image. In her work and knowledge production, Anzaldúa departed first from pictures (images and imagination) and then only in the next step found the words for them. In the workshop, we will explore these images and find out for ourselves how images can help us raise our voices, generate knowledge, and understand other experiences.
